The sweater distribution event started exactly at 9.45 AM as it was planned. Kantaraju, the Education Coordinator and Mr. Nanjundaih, the BEO arrived at Brindavan Tent School which was the venue of the event.
The program started with an Introduction by Kantraju. The day witnessed only 75% of the total strenght of children as it was festival season and many kids had left for their native places. Kantraju, recollected how the Brindavan Tent School had started and had been through many odds to reach the current state. He remembered about the starting of this tent school under a tree shelter. Then it was moved to an open space corridor owned by a person called Fazal. Then, Bhaskar a landlord in the area offered his land and helped for the construction of the current school.
He mentioned about how RIF has helped tent schools in making the education more systematic. He appreciated RIFs help in providing sweaters, shoes, ties to tent school kids during their Karnataka trip. He also appreciated RIF activities of celebrating Diwali by burning crackers with kids, celebrating birthdays of friends , relatives etc in tent schools, painting competition, GK sessions, Saturday classes. He congratulated tent school teachers for being a continued support to RIF’s members. He was thankful to RIF’s members for bringing a positive change in the children's behavior which was evident in their neat clothes unlike in clothes that probably bore stains of soot or grease earlier.
Kantraju announced his extended support from education department side to RIF in continuing our activities towards tent schools.
The entire guest were greeted and welcomed by kids with beautiful red rose flowers. Viju, on behalf of RIF spoke about the activities conducted by RIF in the past one year and also his personal experience. He spoke about the facilities received from the education department, energy and enthusiasm of the government employees and teachers. He touched upon the journey of RIF and its growth from three to 30 members. He explained the importance of building a bond with the children and then teaching them.
Mr.Janardhan Swamy praised Read India Foundation goals and urged RIF members to adopt more schools in south Bangalore.
This was followed by sweater distribution by BEO. BEO was very happy to see kids saying "Thanks you sir" when they received the sweaters.
Then followed the speech by BEO, who quoted examples from his own experience. He appreciated RIF members for sharing their privileges with the under privileged children. He urged parents not to think of only having kids but also keep in mind and think about their future. He compared the kids to "lumps of mud" who through care, attention and affection can be given a wonderful shape. He also mentioned that Brindavan tent school is at par with a model government school. He urged RIF members to build a good team and ensure a good education to a wider range of tent schools.
